Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated an allegation that Iran plans to establish a military presence in Syria and Israel will prevent it.
“Let me reiterate Israel’s policy. We will not allow a regime hell-bent on annihilation of the [Israeli government] to acquire nuclear weapons; we will not allow that regime to entrench itself militarily in Syria,” Netanyahu ranted in a video message posted on his Facebook on Saturday, Sputnik reported. According to local media reports that have not been officially confirmed by either Damascus or Tel Aviv, Syria recently repelled an Israeli attack on a “military position” near Damascus. Some media outlets speculated that the possible target may have been an allegedly Iranian base. Tehran denies reports of having a base in Syria and says its forces are in the Arab country to provide advisory support to Syrian forces fighting a lingering militancy.
