    Shrimp Production Estimated to Rise by 13.6%

    It is estimated that 25,000 tons of shrimps will be farmed in Iran during the current Iranian year (started March 21), which would register a 13.6% rise compared with last year’s production, secretary-general of Seafood Exporters Union said. “We expect to be able to export 20,000 tons of the product this year, which would register a 33% increase compared with last year,” Ali Akbar Khodaei was also quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.   More than 15,000 tons of shrimps worth over 2.21 trillion rials (close to $70 million) were exported to 10 countries in Europe and Asia during the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2017). Last year's production stood at 21,400 tons, registering more than a 20% increase compared with the year before.  Shrimp culture in Iran is mainly undertaken in the provinces of Khuzestan, Hormozgan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Bushehr and Golestan.
