Actor and theater director Hassan Majouni, 49, has brought on stage an adaptation from ‘Incident with a Metranpazh,’ a 1968 play by Russian playwright Alexander Vampilov (1937-1972).
It opened on June 8 and will run through July 9 at Tehran’s Paliz Theater. It starts each night, except Saturdays, at 7 pm.
Translator and theater director Keyvan Sarreshteh, 31, has rendered the play in Persian, IRNA reported.
‘Metranpazh’ (an occupation whose role is a mix of worker and supervisor) in the title, specifies the special, ambiguous role of a pagination master in Russian print shops in the late 19th century, sometimes regarded as a worker and sometimes, a supervisor.
Galoshin, manager of Hotel Taiga faces the same ambiguity when he wonders how to treat Potapov, a hotel guest who by profession is a paginator. Galoshin is not sure if Potapov has an important social position or not.
The subject of the play is on the alienation among people caused by the pursuit of position and power, turning them oppressive toward inferiors and cowards before superiors. It is the first time the work has a public showing in Iran.
“I staged the play after some minor changes in the text. I also updated some concepts. However, due to its affinities with Iranian culture, the play didn’t need much adapting … I only added a receptionist to the roles. Reza Behboudi and Saeed Changizian are permanent actors in my works,” Majouni said.
Other members are Hossein Omidi, Mahtab Servati, Hossein Hosseinian, Mojdeh Daee and Amir Qasemi.
Paliz Theater is located at No. 69, Sepand Street, South Azodi Street, Karim Khan Blvd.
