Iran’s senior envoy in Baghdad Iraj Masjedi underlined that the security and progress of Iraq is important for the Islamic Republic.
“Iraq’s security is Iran’s security and vice versa,” Masjedi said in a meeting with Iraqi officials in the southern holy city of Karbala on Tuesday, Fars News Agency reported.
Referring to the many commonalities between the two neighbors in cultural, religious, historical and geographical fields, the ambassador said, “We need each other. Elevation of Iraq’s power is Iran’s desire. Likewise, if Iran’s power is augmented, it will (also) be at Iraq’s service.”
Masjedi stressed that any country or group which seeks to undermine the friendly relations between the two countries is “neither a friend of Iran nor Iraq.”
In relevant remarks in April, the ambassador renewed Iran’s support for the people and government of Iraq in their ongoing fight against terrorist groups.
“Iran prefers a progressive, powerful, secure and integrated Iraq. In line with this policy, Iran will stand by Iraq under any condition,” the envoy was quoted as saying.
“We should do our best to improve relations between our two countries,” Masjedi said.
