The UN nuclear agency says it will convene a special session of its 35-nation board next week as it considers how to fund extended intensive monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.
The December 11 meeting was announced in an email late Monday from the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency.
Diplomats say that IAEA chief Yukiya Amano will likely ask for an extra $5 million (over 4 million euros) to pay for further monitoring of Iran’s compliance with an interim agreement it reached with the major powers late last year, under which Tehran agreed to temporarily scale down parts of its nuclear work in exchange for limited sanctions relief.
A comprehensive accord was to replace the preliminary deal. But newly extended talks failed to reach agreement last month, and the interim deal was extended.
Iran denies any interest in nuclear arms, saying its program is meant solely for peaceful applications.
