A new seismic fault identified in Tehran is located between the two parallel highways of Hakim and Shahid Hemmat, near Pardisan Park and Milad Tower, District 2 of Tehran Municipality (TM), said Dr. Morteza Talebian, director of Research Institute for Earth Sciences, on Friday. “According to our research, the fault can produce magnitude 6.2-6.3 earthquakes. Quakes stronger than 5.5 on the Richter scale can destroy many residential buildings in Tehran,” ISNA reported. Iran sits astride several major seismic faults, and is prone to frequent earthquakes.
