The 1964 play ‘Incident at Vichy’ written by American playwright and essayist Arthur Miller (1915-2005), is underway at Tehran’s Iranshahr Theater.
It is translated and directed by veteran theater director Manijeh Mohamedi, 71, who heads the Peyvand theater group which is staging the play.
The 70-minute show will run through January 19, starting at 8:15 pm daily, according to Tiwall (tiwall.com).
The play is about a group of men detained during the Vichy regime in France (1940-44). The story takes place in 1942 during World War II. Prisoners await their turn for what is a ‘racial’ inspection by German military officers and Vichy French police. It focuses on the topics of human nature, guilt, fear, and complicity, and examines how the Nazis were able to perpetrate their crimes with so little resistance.
Actor, playwright, theater director and translator Mohammad Eskandari, 70, co-founder of the theater group, is in the cast along with another celebrated thespian Mahvash Afsharpanah, 67, who acts in both films as well as theater.
Majid Jafari, Farnaz Rahnama, Mohammad Naderi, Houman Kiaee, Sam Kaboudvand, Mohammad Khodaverdi, Dariush Barzegar, Mehdi Mashhadi Kazemi and Ehsan Moradkhani are also in the cast.
Additionally, Mohamedi has translated into Persian ‘Amadeus,’ a play by English playwright and screenwriter Peter Shaffer (1926-2016) and ‘State of Siege’ co-authored by Italian writer and screenwriter Franco Solinas (1927-1982) and Greek-French film director and producer Costa Gavras, 83.
