The acclaimed Iranian horror film ‘Fish and Cat’ will be screened at the third International Film Festival which opened on Sunday (Nov 23) in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.
Organized by Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the festival will show 130 different movies chosen from a wide and diverse pool of the 411 entries submitted.
‘Fish and Cat’ is an innovative and peculiarly gripping horror story set in a forest camping site. A group of young students who are there for a kite-flying competition are, however, “put in the path of suspicious and perversely strange restaurant owners, Babak and Saeed.”
The compelling film makes good use of all aspects of uncertainty, mystery and suspense with the constant change in narratives and characters.
Using only a single camera, and shot in one long continuous take, the film makes use of horror elements, a non-linear storyline and strangely delightful black comedy that both troubles and satisfies the viewers, reports vietnamnet.vn
Competitive
The Iranian film will be competing against a strong set of films including: ‘Than Tuong’ (The Talents), ‘Missing Picture of Cambodia,’ ‘The Red Violin of Canada’ and ‘The Coffin Maker.’
The categories of competition include: the best documentary, the best feature film, the best short film, the best director for feature film, the Netpac Prize and the special jury award among others.
The panel of judges includes Kirill Razlogov, director of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research, and Niv Fichman, named the Canadian Producer of the Year by the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) in 2007, Vietnamese director Bui Thac Chuyen and actress Hong Anh.
The premier award winner will receive $5,000.
The festival, which opened at Huu Nghi Culture Center, will conclude on November 27.
