The figures on illiteracy indicate that obstacles to educational opportunities continue to exist across the world, said Vice President for Women and Family Affairs. “Women comprise two-thirds of the world’s 750 million illiterate population,” said Shahindokht Molaverdi on the occasion of the new school year at Alzahra High School in Tehran’s District 17 on September 24, IRNA reported. Noting that according to UNESCO’s definition, reading and writing skills are not considered as literacy anymore, she said communications, financial, media, and computer literacy are also vital factors in education today. “Gaps remain in achieving the desired state of education across the country despite the provisions of upstream documents and the 20-year Vision plan,” she said. “We must take immediate and effective action to address the situation of 3.2 million children out of school and ensure educational justice.”
