Iranian athletes managed to scoop three more medals, one gold and two bronzes, on the sixth day of 2016 Summer Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The fourth gold medalist was the archer Gholamreza Rahimi who won the title of men’s individual recurve open.

Rahimi won gold with a 7-3 triumph over Thailand’s Netsiri Hanreuchai on Tuesday, varzesh3.com reported.

“The match was good and I did my best. The most important thing is to see my flag going up here in the Paralympic Games,” Rahimi said.

“When people in public say that the standard of the Paralympics is lower, I say, ‘No, it is the same. This final match was the standard of Olympic Games - not Paralympic Games.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran’s Ebrahim Ranjbar bagged the bronze medal in the same category.

Ranjbar, who had lost to Rahimi 6-4 in a hard-fought semi-final, beat Luciano Rezende of Brazil 7-1 and earned bronze.

“Defending the motherland, defending your homeland is the duty of everybody in the country and I am proud that I have won two medals for my country” Ranjbar said. “This is my greatest achievement”.

Together with Zahra Nemati, Ranjbar won a silver medal in the mixed team recurve open competitions on September 11.

Competing in men’s 1500 meters final of the track and field, Peyman Nasiri finished in 3:56.24 minutes to win a bronze while he had clinched a gold medal in 2012 London Paralympics with a record of 3:58.49 minutes.

The Iranian runner missed the silver by finishing seven tenths of a second behind Poland’s Daniel Pek. American contestant Michael Brannigan grabbed the gold medal with a finishing time of 3:51.73.

So far with a total of 11 medals, including four golds, five silvers and two bronzes, the Iranians have occupied the 17th spot in the overall standings.

China is still on top with 147 medals, Britain is second with 75 medals and Ukraine third with 72 medals.
