Feasibility Studies for LRT Project

The Tehran Municipality is planning to replace BRT (bus rapid transit) with LRT (light rail transit) on certain routes across the capital city, said Mohsen Sarkhoo, chairman of Tehran City Council’s Urban Traffic and Transport Committee. “The west-east route on Enqelab Street (from Azadi Square to Imam Hossein Square), and the south-north route on Valiasr Avenue (from Rah Ahan Square to Tajrish Square) have been selected for feasibility studies in the first phase,” he said on Sunday, ILNA reported. Each LRT fleet will have three tramcars and would carry 2.5 times the number of passengers each BRT unit can transport. “The municipality will execute the project under BOT (build-operate-transfer) contracts, in which the private sector (or a foreign investor) builds the infrastructure, operates it and eventually transfers ownership to the government,” Sarkhoo said.
