Focus on Elderly Population

A total of 6.4 million seniors are covered by social and health care services in the country, said Farid Barati Sadeh, head of the Secretariat of National Council on Older People affiliated to the State Welfare Organization. He made the remarks at a conference on ‘the State of the Elderly and Policy Requirements in Asia’ in Tehran on Wednesday, ISNA reported. Head of Demography Program at the Research School of Social Sciences of Australian National University, Prof. Peter McDonald, was the keynote speaker. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed globally on June 15. The global population of people aged 60 years and older will more than double, from 542 million in 1995 to about 1.2 billion in 2025. In Iran, it is estimated that seniors will comprise nearly 25% of the population by 2050, when it is estimated to reach 92 million.
