Maryam Mirzakhani, a Stanford University mathematics professor, is among the nine Stanford faculty members to have been selected to join the US National Academy of Sciences.
Members are selected to the academy in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
The membership is considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive, the Stanford University said in a statement on its website. The Stanford scholars were among the 84 new members and 21 foreign associates from 14 countries selected this year, bringing the total number of active members to 2,291 and the total number of foreign associates to 465.
Mirzakhani received the highly prestigious biennial Satter Prize in 2013 in mathematics from the American Mathematical Society. She will be formally inducted next April in Washington.
The renowned Iranian professor won gold medals in both the International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong 1994) in which she scored 41 out of 42 points, and in the International Mathematical Olympiad (Canada 1995) with a perfect score of 42 out of 42 points, ranking her 1st jointly with 14 other participants.
She became a full professor of mathematics at the age of 31 in 2008 at Stanford University.
