The Book City central branch in Tehran will join the world in commemorating 400 years of William Shakespeare, on April 23, coinciding with the ‘Bard of Avon’s’ death anniversary.
The ceremony will be concurrent with the World Book Day when speeches on literary works of art, by Iranian men of letters will be delivered, Honaronline reports.
Author and university professor Dr. Shideh Ahmadzadeh will give a speech on ‘Shakespeare and Poetry’. In addition, literary critic and scholar Dr. Amir-Ali Nojoumian’s ‘Shakespeare and Cinema’, author, literary researcher and translator Dr. Kamram Sepahran’s ‘The Immanent Stage of Shakespeare’, and Reza Sorour, translator of ‘Shakespeare, Our Contemporary’ by Polish political activist, critic and theoretician of theater, Jan Kott, are lectures set to be delivered at the ceremony.
Furthermore, episodes of the TV program ‘In Search of Shakespeare’ by Michael Wood, English historian and broadcaster will be screened.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616), English poet, playwright and actor, was widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet.
His extant works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
His early plays were primarily comedies and histories, and these are regarded as some of the best works ever produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language.
The venue of the ceremony is located at 3rd Alley, Bokharest St., Shahid Beheshti Ave., Tehran.
