Incidence of premature mortality has increased significantly in the country as a result of use of steroids and illegal sport supplements prescribed by sports clubs, said Hossein Rastegar, head of the Food and Drug Control Reference Laboratories at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He warned that anabolic steroids can cause severe liver complications and said, “Since the past 10 years, use of the product is banned across the world, but unfortunately the supplement is produced illegally or smuggled into the country,” IRNA quoted him as saying. Last year, 252 sports clubs were closed in Tehran due to the illegal sale of the harmful supplements.
