    Fetal Heart Surgery

    The second fetal heart surgery in the country was successfully performed by surgeons of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, said Hamid Amuzegar, a member of the surgical team. Pointing to the fact that the operation was unprecedented in the Middle East, he said the surgery was performed on a fetus diagnosed with a heart problem, IRNA reported. The fetus was suffering from a severe pulmonary valve stenosis. Fetal heart surgery at the age of 20 to 30 weeks can help a baby have a normal life after birth, he added. Pulmonary valve stenosis is a condition in which a deformity on or near the pulmonary valve, the valve that influences the blood flow from heart to lungs, slows the blood flow.
