Traffic fines should increase every three years as per the law, said Mohammad Hossein Hamidi, Iran’s Traffic Police Chief.
“However, the new fines proposed by the traffic police is still under review in the government’s social committee,” IRNA quoted him as saying. The last revision in road traffic penalties was in 2011. Hamidi said 70% of road accidents occur as a result of negligent and risky driving and road rage. “This can and should be prevented through higher deterrent fines.” Iran has one of the highest road accident fatality rates in the world despite the fact that the number of cars on its streets is far too low compared with other big countries.
