Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a meeting with Representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Tehran, Maha El-Adawy, asked the UN agency to assist Iran in implementing the national population policies. Zarif pointed to the policies laid down by the Leader, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, to boost population growth, and said UNFPA should help Iran “in achieving the targets in the most efficient manner,” IRNA reported. “The UN agency is prepared to provide Iran with necessary assistance to that end,” said the UN official. In a directive issued to the heads of parliament, judiciary and Executive in May 2014, Ayatollah Khamenei outlined the general policies to encourage population growth to compensate for the alarming decline in the birth rate over the past years.
