The assistant director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said earlier this week that she has always admired the advances Iran has made in science and technology, ISNA reported.
Flavia Schlegel made the remarks in a meeting with Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad Farhadi.
She said Iran is the first country she is visiting since she took office, adding that diversity of scientific activities are “very noticeable”.
Schlegel acknowledged Iranian innovation, saying that cooperation between Iran and UNESCO has always been useful and the organization is willing to adopt practical techniques to consolidate and strengthen cooperation with Tehran.
“UNESCO [has] always acknowledged the achievements Iran has made in medical science, medicine, technology and innovation,” she said. “Iran is a living pattern for [the] combination of tradition and innovation.”
Mohammad Farhadi briefed the official on situation of Iranian universities and the scientific progress Iranians have made.
The minister said the government has improved health standards adding that “life expectancy is now higher.”
“Iran is grappling with challenges related to climate change, dust storms, degradation of environment, water crisis, and an ageing population,” he noted.
