Iran’s trade with neighboring countries, excluding crude oil exports, in the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 21-Aug. 22) stood at 33.33 million tons worth $20.63 billion, registering a 24% rise in value compared with the similar period of last year, according to the spokesperson of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration.
“Iran exported 25.39 million tons of goods worth $10.72 billion to its 15 neighboring countries during the period, which shows a 27% rise in value compared with the similar period of last year. Exports accounted for 58% and 51% of the weight and value of Iran’s total exports during the period under review respectively,” Rouhollah Latifi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
Iraq was the biggest export destination, purchasing 8.65 million tons of Iranian goods worth $2.96 billion, registering a 6% year-on-year decline in value.
It was followed by the UAE with 5 million tons worth $2.78 billion (up 45%), Turkey with 3.68 million tons worth $2.33 billion (up 110%), Afghanistan with 1.25 million tons worth $641 million (down 25%), Pakistan with 1.08 million tons worth $475 million (up 13%), Oman with 1.22 million tons worth $452 million (up 98%), Azerbaijan with 308,000 tons worth $296 million (up 84%), Russia with 417,000 tons worth $291 million (up 32%), Turkmenistan with 529,000 tons worth $166 million (up 42%), Armenia with 358,000 tons worth $144 million (up 44%), Kuwait with 2.17 million tons worth $73 million (up 39%), Kazakhstan with 243,000 tons worth $61.2 million (down 3%), Qatar with 375,000 tons worth $51 million (down 13%), Bahrain with 4,200 tons worth $3.4 million (up 40%) and Saudi Arabia with 376 tons worth $192,000 (up 392%).
All changes are reported in term of value compared to the same period of last year.

The IRICA spokesman said imports from neighboring states to Iran stood at 17.93 million tons worth $9.91 billion during the same period, registering a 21% YOY increase, which accounted for 56% and 46% of the weight and value of Iran’s total imports during the period respectively.
The UAE, with 4.6 million tons worth $6.04 billion topped the list of exporters to Iran among its neighbors, registering a 13% YOY rise. It was followed by Turkey with 1.16 million tons worth $2.16 billion (up 21%), Russia with 1.16 million tons worth $715 million (up 50%), Pakistan with 383,000 tons worth $429 million (up 375%), Oman with 347,000 tons worth $310 million (up 53%), Kazakhstan with 178,000 tons worth $78.4 million (up 174%), Iraq with 54,000 tons worth $74 million (down 58%), Qatar with 1,800 tons worth $17 million (up 268%), Azerbaijan with 8,951 tons worth $15.3 million (up 10%), Turkmenistan with 22,000 tons worth $14.4 million (down 7%), Afghanistan with 8,500 tons worth $10.4 million (up 166%), Kuwait with 1,794 tons worth $3.9 million (down 23%), Armenia with 1,969 tons worth $3.7 million (down 66%) and Bahrain with 28 tons worth $558,000 (up 3%).
Iran registered $810 million in trade surplus with its neighbors during the period under review.
“Iran’s total foreign trade [excluding crude oil exports from the country] during the same period stood at 58.14 million tons worth $42.59 billion, with exports accounting for 44.08 million tons worth 20.93 billion of the overall sum and imports for 14.06 million tons worth $21.66 billion,” Latifi said.
According to Alireza Moqaddesi, the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration, Iran traded 100.13 million tons of goods worth $51.87 billion with its 15 neighboring countries in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2022).
The tonnage and value of trade registered a 23% and 43% rise respectively compared to the preceding year.
Iran’s exports reached 75.44 million tons worth $26.03 billion, registering a 12% and 29% increase in weight and value respectively compared with the year before. As for imports, Iran shipped in 24.68 million tons of products worth over $25.84 billion from its neighbors during the same period, indicating a 68% and 60% growth in tonnage and value respectively compared with the year before.
Trade with neighbors stood at $36.45 billion in the fiscal 2020-21, down from $40 billion in the preceding year. Iran’s exports totaled $20.35 billion in the fiscal 2021-22, indicating a $4 billion decline in value year-on-year. Imports were at $16.09 billion, unchanged compared with the previous year.
