The urea and ammonia output of Lordegan Petrochemical Company in the southwestern Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Province increased by 518% in the first three month of the current Iranian year (March 21-June 21) compared with the same period of last year, managing director of the company said.
“The company produced 293,462 tons of urea and ammonia during the period,” Mohsen Mahmoudi was also quoted as saying by the Oil Ministry’s news agency Shana.
“Producing 61,615 tons of urea fertilizer in the third month of spring [May 22-June 21], which shows an 874% growth year-on-year, is another record for the company,” he added.
With an annual production capacity of 677,000 tons of ammonia and 1 million plus tons of urea, the complex is the sixth petrochemical company in Iran set up by domestic engineers.
LPC is a subsidiary of the Iranian Investment Petrochemical Group, located 55 km off the city of Lordegan. An estimated $800 million have been invested in the two production units of the company.
The ammonia unit in the western province started production two years ago and its urea unit came on stream last year.
Ammonia is used mainly in the production of fertilizers and chemicals like ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, mono ammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate and urea.
More than 90% of the world’s industrial production of urea are used as a nitrogen-release fertilizer and as raw materials in other industries.
Iran is self-sufficient in urea production. In two years, urea output is expected to reach 14.7 million tons per annum from 7.4 million tons after the new plants open.
The country plans to add 8.4 million tons per year to ammonia output by 2026 with 20 new plants. The new units is estimated at $2 billion.
