    Cubans Discuss Economic Ties

The Central Bank of Iran Wednesday hosted a Cuban delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Ricardo Cabrisas. The two sides discussed ways to build banking cooperation.

CBI Governor Ali Salehabadi pointed to the close relationship between the two countries and called for promoting such ties, especially banking collaboration, the central bank's website quoted him as saying.

"We are ready to establish long-term ties with Cuban businesses and financial institutions, and are hopeful about boosting bilateral banking relations.”

Salehabadi expressed the hope that previous agreements between the two sides would be implemented. He did not elaborate. Both countries are under tough US economic sanctions.

Cabrisas referred to two-way agreements and called for robust measures for implementing joint plans and reaching the targets.

Iran and Cuba signed an agreement in Tehran on Tuesday for barter trade at the 18th Iran-Cuba Economic Cooperation Commission meeting.

The two sides also signed agreements to develop industrial, mining and trade ties.

While the two nations have enjoyed cordial political ties  since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, economic cooperation had been limited until recently.

Having the experience of rebuilding some factories in Cuba, Iranian companies now have the opportunity to take part in infrastructure projects in the island state.

A protocol on ports cooperation was signed by the CEO of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization and the visiting senior Cuban official on Tuesday.

Cabrisas visited Tehran to attend the joint commission from May 15 to 17. The 17th meeting of the commission was held in Havana in December 2016.
