The Statistical Center of Iran has released a new report, reviewing price changes in 53 food items during the month ending Oct. 21.
The biggest month-on-month price rise for a food item during the month under review in urban areas was recorded for butter with 40.3%. A hundred grams of butter was sold at 76,511 rials (26 cents).
The second and third biggest month-on-month price increase during the period under review was registered for eggs with 21.2% and onions with 20.6%, the Statistical Center of Iran reported.
A kilogram of eggs was sold at 186,263 rials (65 cents) and a kilogram of onions went for 40,664 rials (14 cents).
Six out of 53 food items examined by SCI saw price decline in the seventh Iranian month (Sept. 22-Oct. 21) compared with the month before.
Oranges with 31.8%, pomegranates with 18% and watermelon with 9.7% were among items with the sharpest month-on-month deflations.
A kilogram of oranges was sold at 139,619 rials (49 cents), a kilogram of pomegranates 123,910 rials (43 cents) and a kilogram of watermelon went for 22,440 rials (7 cents).
When compared with the same month of the year before, retail prices for watermelon during the month increased by 154.8%, registering the highest year-on-year price rise for a food item.
The second and third biggest year-on-year price rises among food items were registered for lentils with 144.1% and imported foreign rice with 136.1%.
A kilogram of lentils was sold at 249,054 rials (87 cents) and a kilogram of imported foreign rice went for 211,801 rials (74 cents).
Year-on-year price deflation was registered for only one item: tomato paste with 10.3%, a kilogram of which was sold at 177,848 rials (62 cents).
The average goods and services Consumer Price Index in the 12-month period ending Oct. 21, which marks the end of the seventh Iranian month, increased by 27.2% compared with the corresponding period of last year, latest data released by the Statistical Center of Iran show.
SCI had put the average annual inflation rate for the preceding Iranian month, which ended on Sept. 21, at 26%.
The consumer inflation for the month under review (Sept. 22-Oct. 21) registered an increase of 41.4% compared with the similar month of the previous Iranian year. The year-on-year inflation of the month ending Sept. 21 was 34.4%.
The overall CPI (using the Iranian year to March 2017 as the base year) stood at 261.5, indicating a 7% rise compared with the month before. Month-on-month consumer inflation was 3.6% for the preceding month (Aug. 22-Sept. 21).
SCI put average annual inflation for urban and rural areas during the month under review at 27.3% and 26.7%, respectively.
CPI registered a year-on-year increase of 41.3% for urban areas and 42.2% for rural areas in the month ending Oct. 21.
The overall CPI reached 260.3 for urban households and 268.2 for rural households, indicating a month-on-month increase of 7.1% and 6.9% for urban and rural areas, respectively.
With a coefficient of 26.64%, the CPI of food and beverages among 12 groups of the basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households stood at 298.7 in the month ending Oct. 21, indicating a 5.7% increase compared with the month before. The food and beverages index registered a year-on-year increase of 40.4%.
The CPI of food and beverage group in the 12-month period ending Oct. 21 increased by 22.6% compared with last year’s corresponding period.
The 12 groups of the basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households surveyed by SCI include "food and beverages” with a coefficient of 26.64%, "tobacco" with a coefficient of 0.59%, "clothing and shoes" with a coefficient of 4.78%, "housing, water, electricity, natural gas and other fuels" with a coefficient of 35.5% (highest), "furniture, home appliances and their maintenance" with a coefficient of 3.93%, "health and treatment" with a coefficient of 7.14%, "transportation" with a coefficient of 9.41%, "communications" with a coefficient of 2.87%, "leisure and culture" with a coefficient of 1.65%, "education" with a coefficient of 1.86%, "hotels and restaurants" with a coefficient of 1.44%, and "miscellaneous items and services" with a coefficient of 4.18%.
