A total of 29,370 trillion rials ($197 million) worth of contraband were confiscated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration during the first 11 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2019-Feb. 19).
“The figure for all of last year was nearly 6.96 trillion rials [$45.19 million]. This year’s figure so far shows a 322% surge compared with the whole of last year,” IRICA's Spokesman Rouhollah Latifi was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.
The installation of customs and border protection equipment, and the use of X-ray trucks and sniffer dogs, are among measures taken to combat smuggling.
