Fish production through cage farming experienced a fourfold increase in the last Iranian year (March 2015-16) compared to the previous year and reached 20,000 tons, according to the head of Iran Fisheries Organization.

“Iran has the capacity to produce 1 million tons of fish in cages in the Caspian Sea in the north and the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea in the south,” Hassan Salehi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.

The official added that the Fourth International Maritime Exhibition of Iran, otherwise known as Iran Sea Expo 2016, is scheduled to be held on September 24-26, on the sidelines of which an agreement will be signed with Norway’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries for cooperation and investments in cage fish farming and the manufacture of equipment in Hormozgan Province.

The organization has set an annual target of harvesting 84,000 tons of fish through cage farming on Hormozgan’s Qeshm Island, according to CEO of Qeshm Free Zone Organization, Hamidreza Momeni.

Cage fish farming is a relatively new method in Iran, whereby cages are placed in lakes, ponds, rivers or seas to breed fish until they can be harvested.
