IRCS Taking New Approach to Restrain Social Harm

The Iranian Red Crescent Society’s 10-year roadmap will be finalized this week at a meeting of IRCS senior managers, said Seyyed Amir Mohsen Ziaei, the head of IRCS.
The action plan comprises all the IRCS targets, tasks, and goals with special focus on preventing and reducing social harm.
“It is essential to review, revise, and rewrite plans every few years based on the circumstances and needs of the time, and not stick to one plan over a long period,” he said on Sunday.
Referring to natural calamities, he said the nature of disasters and their ensuing costs have changed from natural to manmade, or a mix of both, thus necessitating “a change in the approach to crises response over the years.”
The society will execute the plan under two five-year projects, each including several strategies to achieve the targets. As the plan is long-term, all social capacities must be enhanced, including non-governmental organizations.
Noting that tackling social harm should be deemed a national duty, he said the stronger societies are in terms of culture and economy, the more able they will be in combating adversities.
“The current measures have proven inadequate, and we need to realize that to reduce social ills there must be a shift in the society’s collective psyche towards voluntary work.”

  MPO Pledges Support
The Management and Planning Organization (MPO) has pledged to support and assist the IRCS in laying the groundwork for its short, long, and middle-term projects in tackling social harm.
The three-pronged strategy in the roadmap constitutes on one side the society’s objectives and visions, international conventions and treaties, as well as constitution and national commitments; the second considers the demands of today’s society, and the third reflects upon the existing capacities and untapped potential in the country.
With 94 years of experience and as one of the largest volunteer groups in the world (two million members), the IRCS operates in various areas to help reduce human suffering, protect life, and respond and reduce risks in times of crises.
A social council has been set up under the auspices of the IRCS where representatives from all divisions can present their proposals regarding the priorities and goals of volunteerism.
