Heritage List Climbs Yazd Cypress Tree

A cypress tree believed to be over 800 years old in Darbid Village in Yazd Province has been finally inscribed on the National Heritage List. Sasha Riahi Moqaddam, a deputy at the provincial office of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, also told YJC on Monday the inscription can contribute to ecotourism. The tree joins the likes of Badab-e-Soort Natural Springs and Mound Damavand (both in Mazandaran Province) on the list. A conifer of northern temperate regions, most cypress species are trees, while a few are shrubs. The old cypress, alongside other trees in the mountainous area of the village, makes for a stunning view, making Darbid one of the natural attractions of the province. Yazd, a desert province in central Iran, is home to over 50 old tree species, including cypress, plane, walnut and the European ash, ranging from 800 to 1,500 years.
