The quarantines during the Covid-19 pandemic have led to the doubling of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, Nastaran Land, the science secretary of a conference on the prevention and management of post-Covid illnesses stated on Sunday.
“The pandemic inflicted severe emotional and physical damage on people from all age groups,” Land was quoted as saying by IRNA at the Razi International Conference Center.
According to her, restrictive measures during the outbreak have especially affected obesity rates in children and adolescents, anxiety and depression in the elderly and diabetes and high blood pressure in all ages.
“Some 60% of diseases in the country are non-infectious,” she stated. “Spread of the coronavirus over the past two years caused extensive damages on the society’s health.”
She explained that inactivity due to the quarantines, postponement of treatment and other factors have given rise to considerable concern in the health sector.
The conference aims to raise awareness about the health problems linked to the Covid era among health experts as well as the general public.
Sanitary lifestyles, consumption of alcohol, smoking and unhealthy diets are among the key reasons for the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory conditions.
