Iran men’s volleyball team suffered a loss in its opening game in the second round of the 2018 World volleyball Championship on Friday in Sofia, Bulgaria.

According to the official website of the games, co-host Bulgaria beat Iran 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 26-24) in the opening Pool G match. Lions hit 11 aces with Todor Skrimov accounting for seven setting a new record for a World Championship game.

In the first round of the games earlier this month, Iran defeated Bulgaria 3-1. Comparing the two games, Igor Kolakovic, head coach of Iran, said, “it was a completely different game than the first in Varna. From the beginning Bulgaria started to serve really strong without a mistake. We tried to find a way to get closer in the score, but we didn’t succeed.”

“In the other two sets we had our opportunities but once again Bulgaria had a very good serve which destroyed our hopes,” added the Iran manager. “I can just congratulate them for tonight’s victory. The good atmosphere at home is also a very important factor especially for teams such as Bulgaria.”

Canada and the US are also in Pool G. Top teams from the four groups plus two best second teams will advance to the next round.
