In the past decade, 280,000 Iranians lost their lives in road traffic accidents, said deputy head of Iranian Traffic Police Brigadier General Taqi Mehri. Stating that traffic accidents always increase in the sixth month of the Iranian calendar (August 23-September 22), just before the new academic year starts, as there is a rush of tourists and travelers, he said the traffic police “patrol the main highways and roads carefully and seize vehicles of drivers who commit traffic violations like high-speed driving, unauthorized overtaking, and overtaking on left”, ISNA reported. Despite all the measures, the toll in road accidents annually (28,000) is high due to factors such as over speeding by drivers and failure to adhere to lane discipline.
