Iran's Vice President for Science and Technology, Sorena Sattari, says 98% of domestic demand for medicine is produced inside the country, adding that Iran will soon export pharmaceuticals to Europe. “There are excellent opportunities in the area of bio-technology in Iran because of the added value and high price (in global markets),” he was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying. "This is one of the areas that can create many modern businesses in the near future."  According to Sattari, the prices of domestically-made biotechnology drugs are significantly lower than the foreign brands – one-seventh at times. He says Iran is expanding its export market and is already exporting medicine to neighboring countries, including Russia, for the past two years.
