The Regulations Bureau of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran has announced new directives for the import of cars.

The organization, affiliated with the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade, announced that the Vehicle Identification Number or chassis number of imported cars must be declared before the car could enter Iranian ports.

VIN is a unique code, including a serial number, used by the automotive industry to identify motor vehicles.

According to Financial Tribune's sister publication Donya-e-Eqtesad, VIN will make it easier to determine whether or not a car is fit to enter the country.

The new regulations have been communicated to the country's customs border offices and the government warned that importers who fail to register VINs will face problems bringing their new cars into the country.

Farhad Ehteshamzad, the head of Iran's Car Importers Association, said the pilot phase of registering VINs became operational on November 25 and the system would come into effect at all ports in the next few weeks.

The new program supposedly helps stop substandard cars from entering the country. Imported cars with registered VINs will also have to offer mandatory warranties to Iranian customers.

The VIN registration scheme also helps stamp out illegal, independent imports and forces companies to meet international standards.
