The track-laying of a 75-km railroad connecting Urmia, the capital of northwestern West Azarbaijan Province, to the city of Naqadeh also in West Azarbaijan has begun. When completed, the route will connect Urmia to Iran’s main railroad network. The railroad is part of a $106-million project that aims to connect Urmia to neighboring East Azarbaijan Province’s capital Tabriz. Iranian railroad authorities are working to connect the provincial capitals of the country to the main national rail network.
