The prosecutor general of western Ilam Province said Saturday medical centers which don’t abide by the law on using point of sale (POS) devices will be shut down.
He said the law will be enforced for the first time in Ilam from Saturday and then will be extended to medical centers across the country, according to IBENA.
Although POS devices have played a significant role in facilitating the payment of medical services, several medical professionals do not want it.
Besides some problems when it comes to payment of medical services for clients, the lack of POS machines has rendered tracing the income of some physicians extremely difficult if not impossible.
This created enough ground for tax authorities to be anxious about the possibility of tax evasion by doctors and their offices.
The measure was passed into law in February during the parliamentary debate on the current fiscal budget bill (March 2019-20). It was approved as an amendment to the budget law and was made in a bid to allegedly fight tax evasion by prominent physicians in the higher-income bracket but little or no time for tax laws.
MPs made it mandatory for all in the medical profession, including dentists, pharmacists, and related occupations, to install POS devices in the workplace.
Member of Parliament, Nasrollah Pejmanfar, claimed that 67.7 trillion rials ($515 million) in unpaid taxes by physicians is reported annually, citing a survey published by the influential Majlis Research Center.
