The United Nations representative in Iran said on Saturday the international community needs Iran's assistance in the campaign against terrorism as the country can play an "outstanding role" to help promote stability in the region.
Gary Lewis, who is also the representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Iran, told IRNA that "No one can ignore the outstanding role of Iran in the stability of the (Middle East) region and resolving regional conflicts."
"In my opinion certain policies and approaches against Iran should be abandoned and instead special attention should be given to Iran's place and status as a stable and powerful regional state."
Lewis commented that the international community should recognize Iran as a potential partner in resolving regional challenges.
"In spite of the (deteriorating) security conditions (which exist in the countries) to the east and west of Iran's borders, the country itself enjoys stability and has good health and education infrastructure," he noted.
He also said Iran is one of the founding members of the United Nations and the international body welcomes expansion of cooperation with the country in various spheres.
