Major Growth in China's Tourism During Spring Festival

China's tourism industry saw rapid growth in both revenue and number of visitors, during the recent Spring Festival, according to its National Tourism Administration.

NTA revealed on Thursday that the country received a total of 386 million tourists and grossed 475 billion yuan ($74 billion) in tourism between February 15 and 21—an increase of 12.1% and 12.6% respectively compared with the same period of last year, Thepaper.cn reported.

The top 10 popular provincial destinations include Guangdong, renowned for its cuisine, Sichuan, home of the giant panda and hot pot, and Hunan, which is widely known for its natural beauty and the Zhangjiajie UNESCO World Heritage site.

Theme parks such as Shanghai Disneyland and Wanda Snow Amusement Park in Harbin have also proven to be popular festival choices. Many Chinese people chose to go to local temple fairs to mark the traditional Chinese New Year, rather than travel long distances.

With regard to outbound tourism, Chinese holidaymakers visited 68 countries and regions during the Golden Week, spending an average of around $950. Southeast Asia remains the most popular overseas choice, while long-distance destinations such as Argentina and Mexico are becoming more appealing.

According to a forecast report jointly released earlier this month by the China Tourism Academy and Ctrip, one of the country's largest online travel agencies, a total of 6.5 million Chinese people were expected to travel overseas during the holiday.
