Fernando Alonso has reportedly held talks over a potential move to Ferrari at the end of the season.

The Spaniard is said to be unhappy with McLaren because of the amount of false promises they have made, Express reported.

The English manufacturer was supposed to have given Alonso a car to be able to challenge the world championship this term but it has been left in the wake of Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari.

And for that reason, Spanish outlet Diario Gol say the two-time title holder has held secret discussions with his former side about a return next season.

The 26-year-old has showed he has the quality to battle at the front of the grid but the pace of his McLaren has left him wanting.

Diario Gol claimed the two parties met at the Barcelona Grand Prix a fortnight ago and a number of terms were laid on the table.

Alonso apparently earns $47million per year but the Prancing Horse is not willing to stump up such a substantial amount, so he would have to take a pay-cut.

The Italian side will also hope Kimi Raikkonen, 38, retires, as he is expected to do so, to free up a seat.

It is further suggested Sebastian Vettel is not keen on Alonso joining him at Ferrari. The German is thought to see him as a direct threat for the world title.

But if he fails to beat Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton this campaign then Ferrari may dismiss the wishes of their current star.

Alonso is currently gearing up for the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend - a circuit he skipped last year.
