Spain national soccer team should not underestimate Iran, said Vicente del Bosque, a prominent Spanish soccer coach, talking about the games to be played between the national teams of the two countries in Moscow during the Russia World Cup on June 20.
“In the 2018 World Cup, Spain is in a difficult group. No team should be underrated; they may surprise you,” the former coach of Spain (2008-2016) told IRNA in Madrid.
Iran, Spain, Portugal and Morocco are in Group B of the World Cup, slated for June 14-July 15.
He said the Iran coach, Carlos Queiroz, knows the Spanish and Portuguese teams well.
“We should keep in mind that Iran played really well in the world cup qualifying matches, so we shouldn’t underrate them,” he added.
Del Bosque, 67, said that Queiroz’s team will be difficult to play, adding that any opponent can cause trouble in soccer.
Spain has been present in 14 World Cup competitions before and won the cup once in 2010. Spain also was the European champion in 1964, 2008 and 2010.
After taking over from Luis Aragonés - who had led Spain to European success at UEFA Euro 2008 - del Bosque went on to lead his country’s national team to win its first-ever FIFA World Cup in 2010, and then to retain the European Championship in 2012. He coached Real Madrid from 1999 to 2003, which was the most successful period in the club’s modern history.
