Iran’s men and women athletes won more to take their medal count to 18 up until the closing of the 8th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, February 1-3, at Aftab-e Enqelab Sports Complex in Tehran.
Mohammad Baniadam finished second in the men’s pole vault category sharing the same record with the first placed Nikita Filippov, from Kazakhstan. Baniadam failed to win the gold due to the higher number of faults in comparison with the Kazakh, Iran Athletics Federation reported on its website.
The surprise package Sepideh Tavakkoli jumped over the 1.83m bar to set a new national record in women’s high jump in the pentathlon section where athletes took part in five different games.
In shot put category, Tavakkoli came first. In long jump and 800m run she also finished first and finally won the gold for the total performance.
Aleksandra Yurkevskaya from Uzbekistan and Lrina Velihanova from Turkmenistan finished second and third respectively.
In the men’s heptathlon games, Milad Miri and Ali Mohebbi grabbed silver and bronze respectively. Majed Alzaid from Kuwait took the first place.
In the finals of men’s 800-meter run, Pejman Yarvali grabbed silver after Aboubakr Abdollah from Qatar; Kuwaiti runner Ibrahim Alzoufiri finished third.
Ali Samari in shot put won the title and earned the third gold medal for the national squad.
Iranian 4x400 runners were fast in setting a new national record but not fast enough to win gold. The Kazakh national team finished first and women from Iran took silver. Maryam Mohebbi, Faezeh Nesaei, Elham Kakoli and Hanieh Samari were the four women in the 4x400 team.
Although the games ended Saturday night results of six categories were not announced until the paper went to print.
