After 18 years, Iran will host Wrestling U23 World Championships in 2020, Mehr News Agency reported on Saturday.

Iran hosted the last United World Wrestling Championships back in 2002, before the rule on hosting women’s and men’s championships together was introduced.

Based on the rule, any country wanting to host UWW Championships should be able to host multiple events including both men’s and women’s games as well as the Greco-Roman and freestyle.

But due to the decline in the number of volunteer countries, the UWW agreed to let two countries co-host the games.

The decision was made following Iran Wrestling Federation’s proposal at the annual UWW Congress in Budapest, Hungary, in 2016, and it was made again the same year at the congress in Paris where it was approved by the board of directors.

Following the decision, Iran will host the men’s tournament and Finland will host the women’s championships in 2020.

Based on the new rules, the men’s U23 freestyle games will be held in Iran and Finland will run the men’s Greco-Roman and women’s games. The dates for the events have not been announced.
