Managers of France Ligue 1, French professional football league, announced on Friday they have suspended the use of goal-line technology due to a series of errors.

GoalControl, a German company which has developed the goal-line technology, was issued a warning last month over errors made earlier in the season and the move to suspend it came after two more incidents were noted in Wednesday’s French league cup matches,  Reuters reported.

“The GLT experienced two serious malfunctions in the Amiens-PSG match; and in Angers-Montpellier game, the GLT wrongly caused the referee’s watch to vibrate,” the league director general Didier Quillot was quoted as saying by ESPN, US-based global cable and satellite sports television channel.

“These two irregularities are unacceptable, especially as they occur just after we put GoalControl on notice,” he said adding that an administrative council would decide on further action regarding GoalControl next week.

Goal-Line technology is a method used to determine when the ball has completely crossed the goal line in between the goal-posts and underneath the crossbar with the assistance of electronic devices and at the same time assisting the referee in awarding a goal or not.

The objective of goal-line technology is not to replace the role of the officials, but rather to support them in their decision-making. The GLT must provide a clear indication as to whether the ball has fully crossed the line, and this information will serve to assist the referee in making his final decision.

GoalControl system features 14 high speed cameras which are mounted around the stadium, seven directed to each of the goals. These cameras are used to detect if the ball has crossed the goal line or not.
