Weightlifter Sohrab Moradi has been nominated for the 2017 International World Weightlifter of the Year award.

With his remarkable performance last year, Moradi consolidated his place in the list of nominees for Jeno Boskovics Lifter of the Year award. He won three gold medals in the World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, California, last December, Iwf.net reported.

The award is named after Hungarian journalist and specialist of weightlifting, Jeno Boskovics (1928-2010) who was chief editor of the World Weightlifting magazine since its first publication almost three decades ago.

Besides winning all three medals for snatch, clean & Jerk and total, Moradi rocked the world record of 94kg category which he himself had set at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

He enhanced the clean and jerk record to 233kg as well as total record to 417kg during the 2017 World Championships.

The winners are chosen by public voting via the organization website, Iwf.net.  The last day of voting is January 31.

Before Moradi, Kianoush Rostami in the 85kg category was nominated for the trophy in 2016 and due to his outstanding performance in the  Olympics, he was named winner of the trophy following the 20,000 votes cast in his favor by the public.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics Rostami won all three medals for three categories as well as for setting a new world record for total category by lifting 396kg. The record is unbroken.

This year, Moradi has to compete with four other weightlifters, namely Egypt’s Ihab Mahmoud of -77kg, Arley Mendez from Chile in -85kg, Francisco Mosquera Valencia in -62kg from Columbia, and heavyweight Lasha Talakhadze from Georgia in the +105kg category are other nominees.

Rezazadeh has the gold medal from the 2000 Sydney Olympics and 2004 Athens Olympics on in trophy collection. His record in snatch category with 263kg set at Athens Olympics is yet unbeaten.

Also Behdad Salimi in the same class as Rezazadeh won the award twice in 2010 and 2012. Salimi finished first in the 2012 London Olympics.
