After years of research, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics have released a list of the all-time top goalscorers in league fixtures.

The group collected the results by adding up the goals scored by each player in the top flight of each league they played in throughout their careers, Marca reported.

Ferenc Puskás (1927, 2006), the Hungarian striker, famous for his career at Budapesti Honved and Real Madrid, leads the ranking with the 511 goals that he scored in the Hungarian and Spanish leagues.

Puskás is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. A prolific forward, he scored 84 goals in 85 international matches for Hungary. He became an Olympic champion in 1952 and led his nation to the final of the 1954 World Cup where he was named the tournament’s best player. He won three European Cups (1959, 1960, and 1966), 10 national championships (5 Hungarian and 5 Spanish Primera División) and 8 top individual scoring honors.

Hungarian footballer Imre Schlosser is second with 417 goals, almost 100 behind Puskas. In third place, Gyula Zsengeller, also Hungarian, is just one goal behind on 416.

Perhaps surprisingly, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the world’s best players in the current era, are not in the top 10 of historic goalscorers.

Messi is 16th with 361 goals, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo is 12th with 373.
