Iranian female karate fighters Avishan Baqeri and Sara Bahmanyar bagged one  gold and one silver medal respectively on the third day of the 10th WKF Junior, Cadet and U-21 Championships in Spain.

Competing in the women’s under-21 kumite category of -55 kg, Baqeri defeated rivals from Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus to advance to the semifinal match where she overpowered a Chinese opponent. In the final game, Baqeri got the better of a Spaniard to win gold, IRNA reported.

In -50 kg category, Bahmanyar overpowered karatekas from the Dominican Republic, Peru and Morocco to reach the semifinals. There she beat the German fighter but in the final match was defeated by a Spanish rival to take  silver.

In the female junior kata team, Iran’s squad including Yeganeh Shahpari, Golnaz Shahzeidi and Erfaneh Massah got a bronze medal on Friday. It was the first ever medal in the world championships for the Iranian female karatekas.

Also on Friday, Barbod Sedaghat won gold in the junior male kumite -76kg for Iran. The Iranian squad has so far bagged nine medals.

The competitions are underway with the attendance of over 1,700 athletes from 109 countries in Tenerife, Spain.
