Syria and Australia national soccer teams drew 1-1 in the first leg of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Continental Play-off at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Melaka, Malaysia on Thursday.

The return leg of the Syria-Australia tie will be in Sydney on Tuesday with the winners advancing to the Inter-Continental Play-off against the fourth-placed team from CONCACAF in November, the-afc.com reported.

Socceroos scored the first goal in five minutes before the interval. However, Syria, unbeaten in the temporary home of Malaysia, came back strongly after the restart and was awarded a penalty with five minutes to play and turning it to a goal, the first leg ended level.

Australia went into the game having not won on the road since beating the UAE in Abu Dhabi 13 months ago, although they have only lost once in that period.

The teams will now travel to Sydney for the second leg on Tuesday, when Syria will be looking to pick up their first win on the road since a 1-0 victory in China a year ago.
