Iranian football club Gostaresh Foolad sacked its Croatian coach Luka Bonacic after Thursday’s 2-1 defeat against Tractor Sazi in Tabriz’s derby at Iran Pro League 2017-2018.

The 62-year-old manager took charge of Gostaresh on a one-year contract in May but was sacked following the poor results in the IPL.

Gostaresh Foolad sits at the bottom of the IPL table with seven points from eight matches, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Bonacic has already worked for the Iranian football clubs Sepahan, Zob Ahan, Mes Kerman and Esteghlal Ahvaz.

According to the Tabriz based football club, ex-Esteghlal manager Firouz Karimi has signed a contract to take charge of the team. Seven years ago, Karimi, 61, served as Gostaresh head coach for five weeks but was fired due to poor results. Now, he has been selected to save the team from relegating to League 1.

As the head coach of Pas Tehran, Karimi won the 1991–92 and 1992–93 seasons in the Azadegan League as well as the Asian Club Championship in 1993. In 1995, he won Hazfi Cup with Bahman Football Club.

In the last season Gostaresh Foolad had to make do with 8th place in the IPL.
