IAEA Urges Completion of Transparency Measures

The head of the UN nuclear agency on Monday called on Iran to fully implement the five practical transparency measurers it agreed in May to carry out until August 25 under a framework agreement on further cooperation signed between Iran and the agency last November.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Yukiya Amano said Iran had not carried out two of the five transparency steps it had agreed to implement.

"In order to resolve all outstanding issues, past and present, it is very important that Iran continues to implement, in a timely manner, all practical measures agreed ... ," he told the 35-nation board of the IAEA, Reuters reported.

Iranian officials have said that Iran has started implementing the two remaining steps, which are related to the IAEA's investigation into what it calls the possible military dimensions of Tehran's nuclear program, and that the measures could not be completed by the August target due to the "complexity" of the issues.

Iran denies the allegation that its nuclear work may be aimed at developing the capability to develop nuclear weapons and says the program is meant only for peaceful purposes, such as electricity generation. Tehran has increased its cooperation with the IAEA since President Hassan Rouhani took office last year to ease concerns about its nuclear activities.
