An estimated 65% of all blood donors in Iran are between 25 to 44 years old; indicating that the average age of blood donors has not been affected by the ageing population, head of Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization, Ali Akbar Pourfathollah, said.

Around 400,000 liters of blood are collected each year, which makes the country self-reliant.  Moreover, all of the blood donations in Iran are collected from volunteers and non-remunerated donors, he said, ISNA reported.  “Iran is the only country in the Middle East that makes use of plasma after being separated from red blood cells for making plasma-derived medicinal products,” he added.
