The National Disaster Management Organization of Iran has allocated 1.2 billion rials ($33,000), for retrofitting, renovating and improving the safety in seven prisons across the country, ISNA reported.

The organization has identified the prisons in dire need of renovation and will cooperate with the Prisons Organization and the judicial to achieve the task, Mohammad Farid Latifi, an official with the organization said.

According to official data, an estimated 230,000 people are behind bars. The number is seen as big compared to the past decades in the country of 80 million people. In 1979 Iran had 8,000 prisoners and the population was close to 38 million.
