Import of bonsai and bamboo has been prohibited by the Ministry of Agriculture since 2014, but many such plants now in the market have been imported illegally, said Akbar Shahrokhi, head of Iran Florists Union.

From the beginning of this Iranian month (Aug.23) all flower shops have been banned from selling bonsai and bamboo; and the union will remove all of the banned plants from shops, ISNA reported him as saying.

The reason behind the latest move is said to be the contamination of some plants with disease and pests.

By controlling illegal imports the ministry aims to prevent the entry of contaminated plants  in the market by keeping them in quarantine for a fixed period of time and lowering the high prices of such plants.
